The April 6 Saving Private Ryan questions were as follows:

Per. 5A (CA-1, US History/Communications): In groups of 2 or 3 students, I want you to answer the following questions about what we have seen in Saving Private Ryan so far:

1. What governs the rules of war? Why would we want the rule of law to cover war?

2. How do characters within the movie conform to or break the laws of war? Why do they do it? Are they justified when they break those laws of war?

3. List and describe at least three ways in which Spielberg has used cinematographic techniques to control the audience’s sense of narration of the story.

4. Briefly describe how Spielberg uses the symbol of the 101st (the Bald Eagle’s head) to connect the narrative frame (symbolized by the old man in the cemetery at the beginning) to the inner action of the story.

5. Describe how Spielberg uses Capt. Miller’s shaking hands as a leitmotif. What idea does this leitmotif come to symbolize in the movie? Do you think it is effective non-verbal communication? What is another good example of non-verbal communication in the movie?

One person should scribe for your group. One person should gather all responses and put them in my box in C-House.
